Gin in a cask? What is a Barrel Aged Dry Gin?
Cask-aged gin, also called barrel aged gin, is a special category for connoisseurs and enthusiasts. Maturing in oak casks gives the gin depth, complexity and a soft, round structure. The essential oils from juniper and botanicals harmonise with the aromas of the cask – in our case:
- A rhum agricole cask from Martinique,
- made in Cognac, France,
- with fine notes of vanilla, candied orange, coffee and honey.
This unique combination gives the gin a warm, slightly sweet aroma – without losing the character of a true dry gin.
A true one-off
Our Alpengin Barrel Aged Dry Gin – Rum Edition is a single barrel gin – which means it comes from exactly one single cask.
Once the cask is empty, this edition will be history forever.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: juniper, dried fruit and a hint of honey
- Palate: candied orange, fine vanilla, coffee
- Finish: warm, soft and long-lasting – with an elegant cask spice
How to enjoy it
Enjoy it neat – ideally at “old-fashioned” room temperature (16–18 °C), from a nosing glass to let the aromas unfold fully. Or as an Alpengin Sour – for a refined twist on the classic:
Alpengin Sour – the recipe:
- 6 cl Alpengin Barrel Aged – Rum Edition
- 3 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 3 cl cane sugar syrup
Shake everything vigorously, serve on ice and garnish with a slice of lemon.
